“Brewster doesn’t really have an operational capacity for more trains,” Papazoglou said. The study has determined it’s better to connect Danbury to the Southeast station, rather than Brewster, N.Y. That would affect wetlands, but “has the highest speeds cutting down the trip from Danbury to the eventual NYC trip,” said Chris Papazoglou, an engineer with WSP. Another possible route would require a new station platform at Southeast.Ī preferred route would loop from the exiting Beacon line to north of Interstate 84. One option would have connected northbound onto the Harlem line into Southeast, but would have required trains to come into the station and then reverse direction to go to New York City. The Beacon line doesn’t physically connect to the Harlem Line that takes riders to New York City, so officials have considered a few routes to link them.Ī connection in Danbury is “not well suited for direct service to and from Southeast and then down to the existing Danbury station or a location in Danbury,” Galloway said. They’re also considering how the project could affect the existing Maybrook trail in New York, which Danbury hopes to connect to, Galloway said. Researchers have found multiple areas where the railroad crosses wetlands and is near other water resources, while there are residential and other noise-sensitive land uses directly adjacent to the corridor. A battery-powered or electrified light-rail vehicle would also take 111 minutes. The least expensive option is a shuttle that takes riders from Danbury to Southeast, which would cut the estimated time to Grand Central to 111 minutes. With a full-service electric train line, it would take an estimated 104 minutes, compared to 122 minutes now, to get to Grand Central Terminal in midtown Manhattan, said Matrin Hull, with WSP. Various infrastructure improvements would be needed depending on the plan. The study considers the type of rail service and how often. “Those long-distance travelers coming from east of Danbury or north of Danbury and then traveling to Brewster or Southeast are consuming a lot of miles, so giving them the opportunity to shorten that trip had a very significant impact on the number of miles that were reduced,” he said. Researchers found a significant number of people traveling through the area from as far east as Waterbury, Galloway said. The study explores the effects of the project on jobs, congestion, recreation and ease of travel. “It's really certainly something that is tremendous, and really I feel something that we can use as a model for our nation,” said Vincent Tamagna, project manager with Putnam County The capital and operational costs will be determined in the next phase of the study. Reopening the line is a priority for officials in Danbury and Putnam County, N.Y., and could be funded through the federal infrastructure package approved last month.
